Collection: Katharine Burns // WHERE WATER HOLDS

The ocean is a constant in my life—both as a subject and as a space where memory and experience converge. Where Water Holds explores this relationship, where the ocean becomes more than a visual reference. Each painting is rooted in a specific place that holds personal significance, transforming the water into a vessel that contains not just movement and light, but also moments of reflection, emotion, and familiarity.

The idea of holding is central to this body of work. Water, ever-shifting and dynamic, has a unique ability to contain more than its physical properties. It holds a sense of belonging, a connection to place, and a grounding presence. These paintings are not just seascapes; they are representations of places where I’ve felt anchored, where the ocean has acted as a keeper of memory.

At the same time, these works invite viewers to engage beyond the surface. While they reflect my own experiences, the universality of water allows room for personal interpretation. The ocean holds different meanings for each of us—whether as a site of reflection, wonder, or return. Where Water Holds encourages viewers to consider how a place can carry both personal and collective memory, offering a space where the familiar and the unknown quietly intersect.
